i think you will find that a lot of trash is dumped by local caravan park owners to give free campers a bad name. i have personaly seen backpackers physicly threatened by a local caravan park owner (and shire councillor) in southern tasmania

Just be aware that you can purchase rental vehicle excess insruance as a stand alone policy, as a benefit included on your travel insurance or take it out with the hire car/van/camper company when you hire it.

Just check the value on the policy is enough and check that if the rental hire agreement has to be in the same names as the policy holders. Sometimes the insurance will say you have to be the main person on the rental agreement to be able to claim.

The cheapest option is to get it on your travel insurance as an 'extra. Then the next is a stand alone policy. Then through the hire company.

It is cheap to get it as part of your travel insurance just check it is enough. E.g. the policy might say excess up to $4000 but when you hire the excess is $5000.

I never pay the hire company charges they are too expensive. Get a stand alone policy if you havent opted in your travel insurance. You can do it online so there is no reason not to get it even at the last minute.

This article does show that it isn't worth the risk especially when you can get it cheap. It is a shame that the rental companies choose to make money out of this situation rather than being competitive meaning that more people would actually take it out.

I now have an annual policy for whenever I hire. Cost me just $80 AUD.
